What is "Copyright?"

Copyright is a legal right created by the U.S. Copyright Act, (United States Code, Title 17) that grants the creator of an original work, exclusive rights to its use and distribution.  Some of those exclusive rights include: 

  • To reproduce the work in copies 
  • To prepare derivative works based upon the work 
  • To distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending 
  • To display the work publicly
